Recommended bird food combinations for bird feeders

Jun 13, 2025 Bird knowledge presenters

Here are some recommended bird food combinations suitable for bird feeders:
(1) Seed combinations
Basic grain combination: You can choose a mixture of millet, oatmeal, sorghum, and millet. Millet is rich in carbohydrates and provides energy; oatmeal contains protein and dietary fiber and is nutritious; sorghum and millet are also favorite foods of small birds. This combination is suitable for most small finches, such as canaries, pearl birds, and songbirds.
Nut and Seed Combination: Sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, pine nuts, peanuts, and other nuts and seeds are favored by parrots, woodpeckers, and other birds. However, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds are high in fat, so they should be added in moderation to prevent obesity in birds. They can be mixed with millet, corn, etc., in a certain ratio, such as 70% millet and 30% nuts and seeds, to meet the birds' needs for fat and protein.
(2) Insect and protein combination
Insect combinations: For insect-eating birds such as thrushes, larks, and shrikes, you can prepare mealworms, barley worms, and breadworms. These insects are rich in protein and fat, making them an excellent food source for insect-eating birds. Live insects can be placed in a dedicated insect feeder, or dried insects can be ground and mixed with other foods for feeding.
Protein combination: In addition to insects, birds can also be provided with other protein sources, such as boiled eggs, tofu, and lean meat. Boil eggs, chop them into small pieces, cut tofu into small cubes, and slice or mince lean meat. Mix these with grains and vegetables to provide birds with a balanced diet.
Fruit and vegetable combination
(3) Fruit combination
Fruits such as apples, bananas, oranges, grapes, and strawberries are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and many birds enjoy them, such as parrots and white-headed birds. Fruits can be cut into small pieces and placed in a bird feeder. Be sure to replace them promptly to prevent spoilage.
(4) Vegetable Combination
Vegetables such as carrots, leafy greens, pumpkins, tomatoes, and corn are also part of a healthy diet for birds. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, leafy greens contain abundant vitamins and chlorophyll, pumpkins are rich in vitamins and pectin, tomatoes are rich in vitamin C and lycopene, and corn is rich in carbohydrates and protein. Chopping or cooking these vegetables before feeding them to birds can provide them with a variety of nutrients.
(5) Special Needs Combination
Calcium Supplement Combination: For birds that require calcium supplementation, such as parrots and pigeons, add squid bones, eggshell powder, or bone meal to their diet. Squid bones are rich in calcium and trace elements, while eggshell powder and bone meal are also excellent calcium sources. You can hang squid bones near the feeder for birds to peck at, or mix eggshell powder and bone meal with other foods for feeding.
Color-enhancing combination: Some ornamental birds, such as red-billed blue magpies and seven-colored finches, require foods containing pigments to maintain the vibrant color of their feathers. You can add vegetables and fruits rich in pigments, such as carrots, red peppers, and pumpkins, to their diet, or purchase specialized bird feed designed to enhance feather color.
