Recommended bird feeders commonly found in American gardens and instructions for use

Jul 30, 2025 Bird knowledge presenters

Below are some recommendations for bird feeders commonly found in American gardens and instructions for their use:

Platform-style bird feeder
Recommended reasons: Simple structure, open view, can accommodate multiple bird species feeding simultaneously, and can attract birds such as cardinals, bluebirds, and goldfinches.
Usage instructions: Place it in an open area, such as on a tree branch in the garden or on a dedicated bird feeder stand. The height should allow for easy observation of birds while minimizing disturbance, typically around 1.5–2 meters above ground level. Regularly clean residual food and droppings from the platform to prevent bacterial growth and disease.

Tube-shaped bird feeder
Recommended reason: Typically features multiple feeding ports to prevent food spillage, effectively attracting small birds like chickadees and finches. The tube diameter can be adjusted to control the types of birds that access the feeder.
Usage instructions: Choose an appropriate hanging location, such as a tree branch or under an eave, avoiding direct sunlight and rain exposure. Regularly check the feeding ports for blockages, promptly replenish seeds, and keep the feeder clean.

Funnel-shaped bird feeder
Recommended reason: Large capacity, seeds automatically replenish the feeding port, reducing the frequency of adding food, suitable for attracting various seed-eating birds.
Usage instructions: Install on a sturdy stand or hang on a sturdy branch. When seeds in the funnel decrease, add more promptly, and clean seed residue from the bottom.

Hummingbird feeder
Recommended reason: Hummingbirds are small in size and have special dietary needs. This type of feeder is specifically designed for them, attracting colorful hummingbirds and adding vitality to the garden.
Usage instructions: Use a red feeder and fill it with a red liquid food mixture made by combining water and sugar in a 3:1 ratio. Hang the feeder in a location where hummingbirds can easily spot it, such as near flower beds or in a prominent spot in the garden. Replace the food regularly to prevent spoilage and clean the feeder to avoid bacterial growth. Apply a small amount of Vaseline to the surface of the feeder to prevent ants from climbing onto it.

Goldfinch Feeder
Recommended Reason: Designed to accommodate the unique beak structure of goldfinches, it meets their feeding needs, attracts goldfinches and other birds, and brings vitality to the garden.
Usage instructions: Place fruit-based foods such as oranges or grapes in the feeder. Hang the feeder on tree branches or in a shaded area of the garden for easy access by goldfinches. Replace the fruit promptly to maintain freshness and cleanliness.

Beef Suet Feeder
Recommended reason: Made of metal, it can hold high-fat foods, providing birds with nutrients in cold winters to help them maintain body temperature and attract woodpeckers, titmice, and other birds.
Usage instructions: Place tallow blocks in the feeder, then install it on a tree trunk or hang it in a sunny area of the garden. Regularly check the consumption of tallow in winter and replenish it promptly to ensure birds have sufficient food.

Mushroom Solar Bird Feeder
Recommended Reason: Made of thickened metal material, it is durable and sturdy. The rust-resistant coating on the surface can withstand wind and rain. The unique mushroom shape combined with a solar light illuminates the courtyard at night, attracting wild birds such as cardinals, finches, and bluebirds, combining practicality and aesthetics.
Usage instructions: Hang it outdoors in a suitable location, such as on a tree branch or under an eave, using an adjustable steel wire rope. During the day, the solar-powered light automatically charges when exposed to sunlight and illuminates automatically at night. Simply slide open the top cover to add birdseed. Regularly clean the feeder to maintain the transparency of the solar-powered light and the freshness of the birdseed.

Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder
Recommended Reasons: Made of metal and polycarbonate plastic, it is durable, weatherproof, and waterproof. With a 4-pound seed capacity, it automatically prevents squirrels, large birds, and mice without needing adjustments, making it ideal for attracting songbirds like North American cardinals.
Usage instructions: Simply hang it on a tree in your yard or a dedicated bird feeder pole. Open the lid to fill with seeds without disassembling the entire feeder. Regularly inspect the feeder for damage and check the remaining seed quantity.
