Introduction to the more docile and less aggressive bird species found in American gardens, along with explanations of suitable bird feeders.

Jul 14, 2025 Bird knowledge presenters

The following is an introduction to some of the more docile and less aggressive bird species found in American gardens, along with the bird feeders they are suited for:
American Goldfinch
Bird description: Also known as the Northern Goldfinch or American Goldfinch, it is a species of finch native to North America. They are migratory birds, breeding from Canada to North Carolina and wintering from Canada south to Mexico. They are generally docile, but during the breeding season, after nesting is complete, male birds may exhibit aggression toward other intruding males, and females may also show aggression toward other females. However, this aggression subsides after egg-laying.
Suitable Bird Feeder: Seed feeder. You can choose tubular, funnel-shaped, or platform-style seed feeders. Generally, placing sunflower seeds or nyjer seeds will attract them. To prevent squirrels from stealing food, such feeders typically include a roof and a fence-style feeding opening.
Northern Cardinal
Bird description: Also known as the cardinal or bishop bird, it inhabits shrublands, forest edges, and is commonly found in suburban gardens. Although male birds have strong territorial instincts and may chase other males entering their territory, they typically do not actively attack humans or non-territorial intruders. With their vibrant colors and distinctive song, they are highly popular as ornamental birds.
Suitable bird feeders: Mushroom-shaped solar-powered seed feeders are more suitable. For example, the mushroom-shaped solar-powered bird feeder is made of thickened metal material, features a rust-proof coating and drainage holes, and has a compact design. It not only looks aesthetically pleasing but also keeps bird food fresh, attracting redpolls to feed.
American Robin
Bird description: Also known as the traveler, it is the most common, widely distributed, and representative small passerine bird in North America. It often enters human living areas such as lawns and gardens. They have a relatively docile temperament and are a bird species that is easy to observe in courtyards, feeding on insects, fruits, and berries.
Suitable Bird Feeder: Use a platform-style bird feeder, placing fruit chunks, mealworms, or mixed grains inside to attract American robins to feed. This type of feeder is open and spacious, making it easy for them to perch and feed.
Hummingbirds
Bird description: Small in size, vibrant in appearance, and highly skilled at flight, hummingbirds primarily feed on nectar and do not actively attack larger animals. They are curious creatures and will frequently visit gardens if there is a suitable food source.
Suitable feeder: Hummingbird feeder. Typically red in color, it contains a red liquid food mixture made with a 3:1 ratio of water to sugar. The feeder features a unique feeding port design, and some models include perching areas and built-in ant moats to prevent other animals from accessing the feeder, keeping it clean and the nectar fresh.
