Jul 22, 2025 Bird knowledge presenters

The following are some common bird species found in the American jungle that are suitable for human observation:
Parrot Family
Scarlet Macaw: One of the most colorful and largest parrots in the world, with predominantly bright red feathers, a featherless face covered in stripes, and blue wings and tail feathers, creating a striking contrast of vibrant colors. It prefers to inhabit tall trees in moist subtropical lowland rainforests and often flies or roosts in groups with green-winged macaws.
Blue-and-gold Macaw: Also known as the “Lapis Lazuli Macaw,” it can reach a length of 76–86 centimeters and weigh 0.9–1.5 kilograms. Its feathers are primarily blue and yellow, with bright colors. It is friendly toward humans and has a gentle temperament, making it a common sight in the jungles of the Americas and a popular ornamental bird.
Umbrella Bird Family
Andean Crested Umbrella Bird: The national bird of Peru, it moves in pairs or small groups, primarily feeding on fruits and insects, though it occasionally preys on frogs and lizards. The male has an orange-red crest, with vibrant colors on its head, neck, and chest. It has a shy disposition and is often only glimpsed briefly in flight.
Chestnut-crowned Umbrella Bird: The head is chestnut-colored with a black crown. It has been listed as an endangered species in the Red List, but visitors still have a good chance of seeing them in the Manu Biological Reserve in Peru.
Cuckoo Family
Crested Green Cuckoo: Females have a brownish coloration, while males have metallic green feathers on their heads and backs, red abdomens, fluffy crest feathers, and yellow beaks. The combination of bright red and green is visually striking.
Golden-headed Green-backed Woodpecker: Similar to the Crested Green-backed Woodpecker, the most noticeable difference is the absence of a forehead crest, and the tail feathers are not white.
American Finch Family
Common Redpoll: Male Common Redpolls have vibrant plumage and are one of the most photographed birds in North America. Females have paler colors but still have beautiful crests and unique appearances. Known for its enthusiastic courtship displays and melodious song, it is commonly found in temperate woodlands, gardens, and similar environments.
Beautiful Bunting: One of the most vibrantly colored songbirds in the world, the male features a blue head, yellow-green wings, red waist and underparts, and dark wings and tail, while the female is relatively duller in color. It nests in thickets across vast areas of the eastern United States, and is solitary and aggressive during the breeding season.
Other birds
Red-tailed Bee-eater: A small, vibrantly colored bird primarily found in the understory of the Amazon rainforest, with richly colored feathers often including red, yellow, and blue hues. It captures insects in flight with graceful maneuvers.
Toucan: Spends most of its time in the upper canopy of tropical rainforests, renowned for its large, vibrantly colored beak, which often features striking patterns in colors such as yellow, green, and red, complementing the plumage of its body. It is one of the most iconic and visually striking birds in the rainforest.
